I had to make the trek to Unadilla Georgia today and it was a long haul. I keep holding off listening to audio books because I feel I might get too involved since I'm trying to pass these certification courses. Well I do have Sirius radio and bless my soul, they have started a Grateful Dead channel.
I have been a fan of the Dead for about 11 years now and in the course of that time I have acquired probably around 100 tapes of them. Some may think that is quite a bit, others may think that is hardly a collection. Make note I said tapes, not cds or mp3s. This was before all of that existed. This was trading...old school...well not totally, but close. Back in the old days (ha!) we would share our list online at some various spot and set up trades with others. All trading was done on the honor system and while I did get burned a couple of times, it was a pleasant experience 99% of the time. I say that this wasn't the total old school way of trading because the old old school way was for traders to type (one a typewriter) or hand write their list of available shows for trade on a sheet of paper and bring it to a show and set up trades there.
No internet...
No email...
Just pen and paper.
Tape trading is not what it was nor will ever be again due to the internet. The whole "I want it now" attitude has taken over with most people and I can't blame them, although I do miss the anticipation of going to the mailbox and hoping that show from 1973 in Boston had arrived.
Well back to my point, Sirius has devoted a channel to JUST Grateful Dead. That means they will be playing THREE complete shows per day and interviews with either the band or friends of the band at three times during the day.
Today I heard a fellow by the name of Ned Lagin who shares some studio tapes of his with members of the Dead and David Crosby in the studio on Lagin's birthday back in 1975. The tunes were some of the best Coltraine-inspired music I think I've ever heard. It was just what I needed after working a long day and it really hit the spot.
Last Sunday afternoon, Officer Chad Smith, was pulling out of the parking lot of the JR Mall on Scott Street. He noticed a man pass in front of his car looking at him out of the corner of his eye.
The man had a blunt cigar in his hand that he put up his coat sleeve as he walked out of the parking lot towards Hutto McGiver Apartments. His actions appeared suspicious.
Officer Smith drove down MLK and turned on Chestnut St. He saw the man walking out of the woods between Scott Street and Chestnut Street. Officer Smith stopped and asked if he had an ID and the man replied no. When asked his name the man told him he did not need to know his name. He asked the offender why he put the blunt up his sleeve and was acting nervous.
The man stated that he bought the blunt to smoke weed out of. When asked him if he had any marijuana on him and he stated no and that Officer Smith messed him up because he was just about to go buy some. Officer Smith asked if he could search him for marijuana or any other drugs and he said OK.
PSO Smith felt a bulge in his pocket and reached in and pulled out a baggie with what appeared to be marijuana. Officer Smith told him he was under arrest and reached for his handcuffs. The offender then swung at Officer Smith hitting him in the face.
A full fledge fight ensued with Officer Smith taking him to the ground twice. The offender continued to fight and was able scurry away and take off running.
Officer Smith chased him around an apartment building and then across Calhoun Street and through a wooded area. Coming out of the wooded area, the offender continued running across the railroad tracks. PSO Smith decided to return to his car.
During the fight, Officer Smith had dropped 2 cell phones he had on his person. When he arrived back at the car, it appears others that had witnessed the incident had grabbed them and took off.
The video of the offender was retrieved from the store and turned over to Investigator Mark Esquivel.
Investigator Mark Esquivel was able to identify the offender and on Wednesday he arrested 24 year old Byron Lewis Malone of 786 E Griffin in Attapulgus. He was charged with resisting arrest, obstruction and possession of marijuana.
Investigator Esquivel stated they take striking a Public Safety Officer very seriously and was pleased to make the arrest.
